RAG & LLM Context Window Optimization

Higher retrieval precision, lower token cost, grounded answers

Most RAG systems fail not because the model is weak, but because the wrong passages reach the context window. We diagnose retrieval quality, rebuild chunking and metadata, add reranking and enforce a context budget so your assistant answers from the best evidence at a predictable cost.

BottleneckThe Problem

Where RAG Systems Lose Accuracy and Margin

Generic playbooks collapse at enterprise scale. These are the exact failure vectors that keep high-ACV brands out of the AI shortlist.

📉
FAILURE_VECTOR_01

Retrieval Noise Beats Model Quality

Large top-k retrieval dumps marginally relevant passages into the prompt. The model then confuses similar-sounding policies, old pricing or another product line with the correct answer.

Critical Business Impact
Confident but wrong answers, and support teams lose trust in the assistant.
✂️
FAILURE_VECTOR_02

Chunking Destroys Meaning

Fixed-length chunks split tables, procedures and definitions mid-thought. Embeddings then represent fragments that cannot answer the question even when the source page is perfect.

Critical Business Impact
The system appears to lack knowledge it actually has, driving unnecessary re-indexing and model upgrades.
💸
FAILURE_VECTOR_03

Context Stuffing Inflates Cost

Sending 20–40 passages per request multiplies input tokens, increases latency and dilutes attention. Teams often respond by downgrading models, which hides the retrieval problem.

Critical Business Impact
Higher cost per answer and slower responses without a measurable quality gain.
MethodExecution Protocol

Our 4-Phase Context Optimization Protocol

A deterministic, phased protocol — every phase ships a production artefact, not a slide.

01
Week 1

Retrieval & Answer Baseline

We replay real user questions against your current pipeline and measure retrieval recall, answer faithfulness, latency and token spend per query.

Key Deliverables
  • ✓Baseline scorecard
  • ✓Failure taxonomy
  • ✓Golden query set
02
Week 2

Chunking & Metadata Redesign

We restructure content into semantically complete chunks with headings, entity metadata and stable IDs so retrieval can target the right passage and cite it precisely.

Key Deliverables
  • ✓Chunking specification
  • ✓Metadata schema
  • ✓Re-indexing plan
03
Week 3

Reranking & Context Assembly

We add a reranking stage, deduplicate near-identical passages, enforce a token budget and order evidence so the model sees the most authoritative context first.

Key Deliverables
  • ✓Reranker configuration
  • ✓Deduplication rules
  • ✓Context budget policy
04
Week 4

Measurement & Monitoring

We rerun the golden set, compare before and after, and instrument ongoing retrieval and cost metrics so regressions surface quickly.

Key Deliverables
  • ✓Before/after evaluation
  • ✓Cost per answer report
  • ✓Monitoring dashboard

DeliverablesWhat You Get

What You Get in the RAG Optimization Sprint

🔬

Retrieval Quality Diagnosis

Query-level analysis of what was retrieved, what should have been retrieved and why the gap occurred.

→
Strategic Impact: Fixes target the actual failure mode instead of guessing at prompts.
🧩

Semantic Chunking & Metadata Standard

A repeatable chunking specification with heading hierarchy, entity tags and citation anchors.

→
Strategic Impact: Retrieval precision improves and answers can cite exact sections.
🎯

Reranking & Context Budget Policy

Reranker setup, deduplication and a documented token budget per query class.

→
Strategic Impact: Fewer irrelevant tokens, lower cost and higher answer faithfulness.
📊

Before/After Evaluation Report

Measured deltas for retrieval recall, answer accuracy, latency and spend, with the harness to rerun them.

→
Strategic Impact: Proves ROI and gives your team a permanent regression tool.
ArchitectureProduction Code

Context Assembly: Retrieve Wide, Rerank Narrow, Budget Hard

A wide candidate set protects recall. Reranking and deduplication protect precision. A hard token budget protects latency and cost. Citations tie every answer back to a source chunk.

lib/rag/context.ts
typescript
const candidates = await retrieve(query, { topK: 40 });
const unique = dedupeBySource(candidates);
const ranked = await rerank(query, unique, { topK: 10 });

const context = selectWithinBudget(ranked, {
  maxTokens: 6000,
  minEvidence: 2,
  preferHeadings: true,
});

return buildPrompt({ query, context, requireCitations: true });
FitQualification

Who this is engineered for — and who it is not.

✓ Ideal Client Profile
  • ✓Teams with a live RAG assistant that gives inconsistent or unsupported answers
  • ✓Products where token cost or latency per answer is hurting margins
  • ✓Engineering teams preparing for a model migration and needing a stable evaluation baseline
✕ Not a Suitable Fit
  • ✕Projects with no existing pipeline and no evaluation data (start with the pipeline build)
  • ✕Teams unwilling to re-index content or change retrieval configuration
FAQSpecifications

Technical specifications & engagements.

What does context window optimization actually change?▾
It changes what evidence reaches the model and how much of it. We improve chunking and metadata, add reranking, deduplicate passages and enforce a token budget. The model itself may stay the same while answer accuracy rises and cost falls.
How do you measure improvement?▾
We build a golden query set from real user questions, then measure retrieval recall, answer faithfulness and citation correctness before and after. We also track latency and token spend per query so quality and economics are reported together.
Will this work with our vector database?▾
Yes. The techniques are database-agnostic. We work with pgvector, Pinecone, Qdrant, Weaviate, Elasticsearch and managed search services, and we do not require a migration unless the current store cannot support metadata filtering.
Can you reduce cost without hurting answer quality?▾
Usually. Most pipelines send far more context than needed. Reranking and deduplication often cut input tokens substantially while improving precision, because the model sees less contradictory material.
How is this different from building a custom AI pipeline?▾
This is a four-week optimization of an existing system. Custom AI Pipelines for B2B SaaS (/custom-ai-pipelines-for-b2b-saas) is a six-week build for teams starting from scratch or replacing a prototype.
